Curator: Nguyen Nhu Huy

Launching time: 2:00 pm – 10 March 2024

Opening time: 10 – 17 March 2024

Venue sponsor: Le Lycée Gallery, Ana Mandara Dalat Resort, No.2 Le Lai Street, Ward 5, Da Lat City, Lam Dong

The exhibition is part of the “Da Lat Classical Music Festival 2024,” organized by the Vietnam Youth Symphony Orchestra. The 12 zodiac animal works by the renowned artist Nguyen Tu Nghiem featured in the exhibition are from the collection of pianist Tran Le Bao Quyen. The exhibition coincides with the festival dates, running from March 10 to March 17, 2024.

Two classical music performances will accompany the exhibition in the exhibition space, creating a direct dialogue with the works of the famous artist Nguyen Tu Nghiem. One performance will take place on the opening day of the exhibition,  and the other  a day before the closing day. This marks the first time that the works of the esteemed Indochina painter Nguyen Tu Nghiem are being displayed in Da Lat.

The paintings of the 12 zodiac animals selected this time are being unveiled to the public for the first time from the private collection of Pianist Tran Le Bao Quyen, who is the grandson of writer Nguyen Tuan (the father of Ms. Thu Giang, the wife of the renowned artist Nguyen Tu Nghiem). This marks the debut of an Indochinese master in an interdisciplinary and intercultural curatorial framework.

Curatorial elements:

This exhibition showcases the works of a celebrated Indochinese painter, aiming not only to create an aesthetic space but also to foster a platform for intercultural and interartistic dialogue on philosophical and literary themes. The exploration of visual and human chemistry goes beyond the boundaries of aesthetics, delving into deeper realms of thought and expression.

In this exhibition, Nguyen Tu Nghiem is not portrayed as a master from the past; rather, he is depicted as a figure who is relevant in the present. Through his thoughts and visual inquiries, he delves into cultural issues affecting the people of today.

The exhibition aims to introduce a fresh curatorial viewpoint on historical masters, depicting them not merely as relics of the past but as figures with ongoing contemporary significance linked to history. The concern and dialogue present in their works about and for the people have remained constant and everlasting.
